There are so many benefits to reading that everyone should do it. The obvious benefit is that you get a richer vocabulary. But there’s so much more to it than that.Reading lets you think in a different way. If a novel is written well, it contains the “voice” of the writer. After reading a few pages, you soon learn to think in the way that the writer thinks – you understand his or her voice. This makes you forget the way your own mind works and let the writers do your thinking of you. This is one reason why reading is relaxing – you are not made to think. But novels also make your imagination work in the way that television doesn’t. When you read about a person or a place, for example, the writer gives some information, but your imagination has to do the rest.Novels also have ideas in them, and reading lets us find out about new ideas. The more ideas we discover, the better it is for us. The facts in a novel are not always true, but the ideas we read about help us to test our own understanding of the world. Finally, a good novel often has suspense in it. This is something that make us want to read more. In a simple story, we are only given enough information to follow the events. Suspense is created when we are given a little bit more information, and we start to ask ourselves questions about the novels. Questions 10 points (2 marks per answer) 1. What does the first part say about reading novels? 2. What is the result of understanding the writer's 'voice'? 3. What is the difference between reading a novel and watching television? 4.
